1.         What are the characteristics of this new Braille display series?

·         Ergonomically positioned thumb keys, cursor routing keys above each Braille cell and 6 intuitive command keys located on both sides of the Braille display.

2.         What are the differences between the existing Brailliant displays and the new Brailliant series?

This new generation includes thumb keys for intuitive navigation, a highly responsive Braille keyboard and a lower price. The new displays maintain high quality Braille cells. They are also lightweight and compact.

 

3.         What are the available models?

  The Brailliant braille displays provide large amounts of Braille in a compact design for efficient use.  The Brailliant comes in three different models:

·         Brailliant BI 32 with Braille input keys and 32 cells of high quality Braille.

·         Brailliant BI 40 with Braille input keys and 40 cells of high quality Braille.

·         Brailliant B80 with 80 cells of high quality Braille.

5.         Is the new Brailliant compatible with JAWS and Window Eyes?

The Brailliant is compatible with JAWS 10 and above and Window Eyes 7.5.2 and above.

6.         Is the new Brailliant compatible with Windows 8?

Yes, the Brailliant is compatible withal versions of Windows XP or later.

 

7.       What screen readers are the Brailliant Braille displays compatible with?
Aside from Jaws and WindowEyes, the Brailliant displays are compatible with:

o   System Access

o   Android BrailleBack Jellybean or later

8.      What supported languages are available for the Brailliant Braille display ?

9.      Can I charge my Brailliant with a wall power adapter?

You can charge your display with any standard USB power adapter. Here are some specifications regarding the adapter; the voltage should be 5 VDC and a minimum current of 500mA. The adapter must be a switching adapter or switching power supply.

 

10.   What is the warranty for the Brailliant displays?

The Brailliant displays from HumanWare have a 2-year warranty on parts and labor. It’s also possible to purchase a Service contract via Customer Service at 1-800-722-3393

 

11.  How do I upgrade the Brailliant?

Upgrades for the Brailliant firmware, as well as the screen reader drivers, will be available on our website.

 

12.  What is the battery life and how do I recharge it?

To optimize the battery calibration, we recommend charging the device for a minimum of 8 hours before the first use. After the first use, it will take 4 hours to fully charge the battery. When connected to a computer, the Brailliant's battery recharges by default through the USB port.  When fully charged, the Brailliant can be used for up to 20 hours when used with Bluetooth.

 

13.  Is the battery user replaceable?

The battery is not user replaceable. Please contact HumanWare to replace it.

 

14.  How do I access the internal menu?

When the unit is powered on, the Brailliant is providing information only.  After you power the Brailliant on, you can find:

·         Battery level

·         Communication channel

·         Information on how to activate the settings menu


double tap the power button to enter the settings menu where you can modify the settings of the Brailliant.  If you are using the Brailliant with another device, simply double tap the Brailliant to enter the menu at any point.

 

15.  How do I navigate in the menu?

Use the Up and Down thumb keys to review the menu items. Use the Left and Right thumb keys to modify settings.

 

16.  Can the Brailliant be connected wirelessly?

The Brailliant displays have built-in Bluetooth support. You can wirelessly connect to a PC and/or mobile devices.

 

17.  How do I switch between USB and Bluetooth connectivity?

By default, the Brailliant selects automatically the connection. When a USB cable is connected, the Brailliant will work with USB. When disconnecting the cable, you can use your Brailliant via Bluetooth.  In channel setting, select USB if you don’t want to have your Brailliant discovered by other Bluetooth devices. Select Bluetooth if you are using your Brailliant via Bluetooth and need to recharge it through USB.

 

18.  What can I do when my Brailliant is not recognized by my computer using USB?

First, restart both the PC and the Brilliant as this solves the majority of these issues. If the Brailliant still doesn’t communicate, restore default settings from the Brailliant’s internal menu and try to reconnect.

 

19.  What can I do when my Brailliant is not recognized by my computer using Bluetooth?

Make sure that you have added the right COM port number assigned to the incoming serial port of your Brailliant in the Braille settings of your screen reader.

 

 

20.  What can I do if my Brailliant beeps?

When the battery is very low, the Brailliant makes 4 beeps and switches off. You have to connect your unit to the USB port of your computer or to a USB AC adapter to recharge the battery of your Brailliant.

 

21.  What accessible formats will the user documentation be in?

 The Brailliant comes with 2 documents:

·         The User Guide contains technical information regarding the device. This document is available in Word, PDF and Daisy formats.

The document Using Brailliant with screen readers describes how to use the Brailliant with screen readers and contains the summary of commands for each of them. This document is available in Word and PDF formats.

22.   What do I do if my Brailliant is not recognized by my iOS device?

If you have VoiceOver running on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch, and your Brailliant is not being recognized after you have done the set up, do the following:

·         With the Brailliant turned on, lock your iOS device.

·         Wait 5 seconds and unlock it with the home button.

·         After 5 seconds, the Brailliant should be recognized by the iOS device.

If this does not fix the problem:

·         Turn off both iOS device and Brailliant completely.

·         Turn on the Brailliant.

·         Turn on the iOS device.

·         The Brailliant should be recognized.

If the Brailliant is still not connecting.

o   Go back to the VoiceOver Braille settings.

o   Locate the Brailliant in the device list and swipe right to the “More Info” button and double tap it.  

o   Double tap the “Forget this device” button and confirm.  This will temporarily forget that the Brailliant is paired with your iOS device.

Re-pair the Brailliant by double tapping it in the device list.
