A bursary for those shaping a more accessible world
HumanWare believes that innovation starts with curiosity with the courage to imagine a world that works better for everyone. The HumanWare – Jim Halliday STEAM Innovation Bursary celebrates the creativity and leadership of blind and low-vision students who use science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) to make accessibility part of the future, supporting them through technology-based awards that recognize innovation, creativity, and inclusion.
HumanWare is proud to announce the launch of the 2026 edition of the HumanWare – Jim Halliday STEAM Innovation Bursary, a global program recognizing individuals who combine skill, empathy, and purpose people who create, design, or advocate for meaningful change.

For those who think beyond the ordinary
The bursary seeks students who ask bold questions: How could this be made better for everyone?
It celebrates projects that merge disciplines and challenge conventions:
- A student combining art and engineering to design accessible learning tools.
- A developer using technology and empathy-driven design to improve daily life.
- An artist raising awareness about inclusion through creative media.
Projects can take many forms: visual, tactile, auditory, or conceptual — as long as they embody curiosity, compassion, and the drive to make accessibility part of everyday innovation.

Open to changemakers everywhere
Eligibility is open to students, aged 13 to 25 years old, who have developed or are developing STEAM-related projects that improve accessibility or benefit their communities.
Applicants may apply directly or be nominated by a teacher, mentor, or community leader. The program is global, with a focus on accessibility, inclusion, and assistive technologies. Blind and low-vision students are strongly encouraged to apply.
An evaluation committee will review applications based on innovation, impact, alignment with HumanWare’s values, communication quality, and community engagement.
Beyond recognition
This bursary isn’t just about rewarding a project, it’s about amplifying innovation. Recipients will receive HumanWare’s selection of cutting-edge braille and low vision solutions — innovative products worth thousands — designed to foster creativity and growth in STEAM. The award package features three exciting options: Mantis, Brailliant BI X 40, and a Prodigi Complete Kit complete with a document camera and Surface tablet.
They will also join a growing movement of advocates, designers, and innovators who use their ideas to shape a more inclusive world. Their stories will be shared across HumanWare’s platforms to inspire others to see technology not only as a tool, but as a force for equity and inclusion.

Applications open early 2026.
